Overall, 79,097 vehicles were sold in April, an increase of 6.6 per cent (or 4,833 vehicles) compared to the same month in 2011. On a year to date basis, this is a 5.1 per cent increase (16,541 vehicles) on sales for the first four months in 2011.

?Yet again, SUVs dominate the Australian vehicle market, with sales increasing for all sizes of SUVs in the private, business and rental sectors,? FCAI Chief Executive Ian Chalmers said. ?This month however we can also see an interesting emergence of customer preference for diesel powered SUVs.?

Private sales for diesel SUVs increased by 56.0 per cent (or 1,530 vehicles) compared to the same month in 2011, and 47.9 per cent (5,485) for the same four-month period last year. Similarly, non-private sales for diesel SUVs increased by 47.5 per cent (1,507) compared with April 2011 and 39.3 percent (5,588) for the same period in 2011. Overall, SUV sales increased by 24.4 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Meanwhile sales are down for large passenger vehicles, but medium passenger car sales continue to be strong, up 14.6 per cent (3,428) compared with the same period last year. Sales of sports cars show a healthy resurgence with an increase of 36.1 per cent (1,680) compared with the same period.

Sales of locally manufactured vehicles are up 17.1 per cent compared to the same period last year. The popular Mazda3 was pipped at the post in April by the Toyota HiLux with 3,565 sales. Toyota was the best performing brand in April selling 16,568 vehicles, followed by Mazda with 7,681 and then Holden with 7,589.

You may have heard of a recent phenomenon called ?green cabinets’, or even ?green kitchens’. Much like an actor’s green room, this has nothing to do with colour — green simply refers to the fact that these cabinets are good for the environment. So what makes a green cabinet, and why are more people using them in their homes? For starters, green cabinets are fashioned from renewable materials, which can be easily replenished once they are used. Bamboo, for example, is an increasingly popular base material for kitchen furnishings, and cabinets in particular. Bamboo is actually a grass, not a tree, which means that it can easily be regrown in a relatively short space of time. Rather than cutting down the entire plant, harvesters use only the bamboo stalks, leaving the bulb in the earth to regrow over a period of three years or so. This means that bamboo supplies are not as easily exhausted as trees, which can take decades to reach maturity and only minutes to cut down. It also means that bamboo is less expensive than many other types of wood. But don’t be fooled into thinking that bamboo is a weak material simply because it isn’t traditional hard wood. This pliant grass is actually stronger than oak and just as durable. Besides the materials they are made from, ?green’ cabinets are also treated with finishing processes (such as veneers and top coats) that are not harmful to the environment. Many cabinets require an adhesive to fit them together and are also treated with a veneer finish to help them last as long as possible. Kitchen cabinet makers and suppliers are starting to conform to certain standards regarding the materials they use to treat the raw wood. CARB compliant plywoods, for example, cut down harmful VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) such as the formaldehyde used in hard wood plywood adhesives. Water based glues and top coats can also help, as harmful air pollutants are found in paint and stain as well as adhesives. The quality is just as high as traditional top coats, in fact, water based coats generally retain paint better and offer a harder finish than finishers containing VOCs. So where can you find ?green’ cabinets? While certain suppliers specialise in green cabinets and offer a wide range of styles and sizes, their increasing popularity means they can easily be found in many online stores. HELP

Whether it’s one dog or two [or three!], photographing animals is pretty demanding. Typically I don’t have any assistance when I am working with my dogs [Daniel shuns my doggy dress up ways!], but it is always extremely helpful. Ask a friend to help hand you treats, round up the animals, keep them entertained, etc.

TREATS

Have a pretty big stash of small dog treats. SMALL. You will be using lots of treats to get your dog where you want them, so make sure you the treats are small or you will go through way too many! Break up the bigger treats if you need to.

While holding a treat in your hand, command your pet into the pose you desire – or just get their attention to the lens. Lower your hand to ensure the pup obeys. I usually don’t give them the treat until I have told them to “stay” a couple times. You may have to go through this process many times until your pet notices the pattern.

**Note: Some dogs don’t care too much about treats. Buster prefers kisses and belly rubs when she does something right.

PROPS

If you are going to put a prop on or near your dog, you are going to need to train them to either a) leave it on, or b) leave it alone. This will take more treats. I tend to say “ah ah!” a lot to my dogs. They know that means STOP whatever it is they are doing. haha

Sometimes, if your pet is being fussy about glasses or a headband, the task is easier once you have the dog lay down. There isn’t as much balancing involved.

Or you can fuss at them so much they get bored and put their heads down.

*Balancing is something you will need to teach your pet gradually. Buster was easy to train, but I only made her practice in short spurts. She would get bored and I would get frustrated if we went too long.

ANGLES

DO NOT take a photograph of your pet walking over to you. Usually their head is down and you see something like this:

The composition just isn’t that great…

DO take a photo of your dog running towards you. Those are usually pretty rad.

You pretty much want to get in your pet’s face for the best photograph.
Be at their level.

Shots from above are only good if your dog is looking up at you. Those can be pretty amazing.

I obviously don’t try to get my dogs to look directly into the camera, but if you ever want to do that, just put the treat or toy above the lens.

**edit: My friend Shreya totally pointed out/reminded me of the Weird Noises method of getting a dog to look at you. Choose your moments carefully, though! My dogs aren’t amused by strange noises anymore. haha!
Also, this method works wonderfully if you are trying to get a dog to perk his or her ears.

My main advice for photographing animals – take TONS of pictures. For every 50 you take, there will only be a couple good shots. Patience is key. It usually takes me close to an hour to get just the right facial expressions and poses. Oh, and dogs need breaks, too.

Nvidia Releases Unified FREE Version : No more “Professional” vs. “Standard” Editions

I was happy to read the latest news that shows Nvidia has come to the realization that the best way to further adoption of its CUDA technology is to make its productivity tools (like Nsight 2.2) easily available to all developers. ?Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA)?corporation’s?line of GPUs (Graphical Processing Units) provides incredibly powerful?parallel computing within reach of most individual users and businesses through rather affordable Nvidia Graphics Cards, including its most recent “Kepler” GPUs that have just started hitting the store shelves. The Kepler architecture is available in the latest Nvidia graphics cards like the GeForce GTX 680.

An even wider range of developers is now within reach of simplified CUDA programming and software development thanks to the new Eclipse IDE plugin. The Microsoft Visual Studio version is still available, but now the Eclipse version will open up development of CUDA applications under Eclipse on Linux and MacOS environments (I am still not sure why support for an Eclipse version on Windows OS is not yet indicated; I cannot help wonder if Nvidia has some existing licensing agreement with MS to promote Visual Studio for Windows development ? hopefully, with time, the Nsight Eclipse Edition will run on Windows Eclipse too).

Eclipse Edition Specific

One standout in the Eclipse edition is that it uses a preview version of the CUDA 5.0 toolkit that includes Nvidia’s own C and C++ compilers. There is actually a presentation about CUDA 5.0 new features today, and I will be blogging about those new features as more details emerge.

Visual Studio Edition Specific

Some features only make sense on Windows, like the support for DirectX 9 frame debugging, frame profiling, and analysis. But, I found it odd that features like “Local CUDA debugging on a single GPU system” and “Support for the new Kepler architecture” were currently only shown as bullet-points under the Visual Studio / Windows version of Nsight and not under the new Eclipse Nsight version. I wonder if this is simply due to how new the Eclipse product is and the fact that it may still take a bit of time to push the same feature-set into both versions. I sure hope that is the case, as the single-GPU CUDA debugging and latest GPU support are both very interesting to me and other developers (especially if you only have one GPU installed in a development system).

General Nsight 2.2 Features on Interest

Nvidia has added features like automatic code refactoring (to convert sequential CPU loops into GPU kernels where parallel GPU execution is possible), syntax highlighting and autocompletion for both CPU and GPU code, and a code analysis system to help identify bottlenecks in CPU-GPU applications via a unified CPU and GPU application trace.

The Nsight Source Code Editor has new project templates and integration with the CUDA SDK samples to make getting started quick and easy ? this should certainly help new developers get productive more quickly. The editor has CUDA code highlighting to make it easy to navigate heterogeneous code while CUDA-aware code completion, inline help, and refactoring are certain to improve developer productivity and code quality.

The Nsight Debugger provides seamless and simultaneous debugging of both CPU and GPU code as well as the ability to view program variables across several CUDA threads and examine execution state and mapping of the kernels and GPUs. You can view, navigate and filter to selectively track execution across threads, plus you have the ability to set breakpoints and perform single-step execution at both source-code and assembly levels. This all sounds like great improvements to a rapidly developing product that has come a long way in the past couple years.
